Description

Messier 25 is a bright open cluster in the constellation of Sagittarius (The Archer) and is located approximately 2,000 light years from Earth. The cluster is about 90 million years old which makes it quite young when compared to our Sun which is a very mature 4.6 billion years old. However, the cluster covers an area of sky approximately 13 light years across making it quite disperse. There are only 601 star catalogued as part of the cluster.

The cluster is quite attractive to view and if you stand back from the image and look closely there is evidence of dark dust lanes running through the field and the core of the cluster. The dat a for this image were captured as a 'grab and go' data set whilst waiting for other objects to get high enough to start imaging. Its nice to be able to make the best use of every minute of dark sky time that we can.
